Cari Clark Phelps: Creative Type
Photography By Kevin Banker

This young designer is captivating the city with her graphic content.

As a child, Cari Clark Phelps traveled the eastern seaboard with her family. Her parents were artists who collected and used natural materials to create woven sculptures which they sold at art festivals.
That artistic gene lives on in the success of Cari’s Savannah-based visual communications firm, Clark Creative.  Cari, a SCAD alumna, opened the company in 2004 and has won numerous design and business awards from such prestigious associations as the American Advertising Federation Savannah. Lately, she has created brand strategies for economic development programs throughout the Southeast, including the Savannah Development and Renewal Authority’s “My Savannah” campaign.

I live in Savannah because … it’s a great place to stay connected; the business community is so welcoming; it inspires creativity; the historic beauty can’t be found anywhere else quite like this, and the people watching can’t be beat!
I start my day by … reaching for my iPhone.  I check my calendar, the weather and e-mail — in that order.
My pet peeve is … poor grammar and misspelling.  No exceptions – texts, twitter, notes…nothing flies past my radar.
My favorite artists are … Robert Rauschenberg, Joan Miró and, locally, Marcus Kenney.
If I could be reincarnated it would be as … a bird in a protected tropical rainforest.
It doesn’t get any more “Savannah” than … green grits on St. Patrick’s day.
I am terrified of … medical procedures.
My friends tell me I’m … lucky to travel so often.
My passion is … traveling to exotic locations and supporting small businesses.
I regret … not having more fun in college.
My proudest moment was … accepting the Savannah Small Business Chamber’s award for New and Emerging Business of the Year.
I am inspired by… my friend Laura, vintage signage, remote places, talented designers, New York City and museums of any kind.
