grooming your groom
By Meaghan Walsh

Yes, you’ll be breathtaking. But you’re only half of the equation. Here’s how to make sure your man holds up his end of the deal.

HE ASKED FOR IT.  He even got down on one knee. In fact, when you think about it, it’s your sacred duty to style this man into the dashing fairy-tale hero he was meant to be—whether he likes it or not. After all, it wouldn’t be your dream wedding without him.

From the suit to the shave, local experts have insights on how to get your Prince Charming to look the part.

TO RENT OR TO BUY?
Kelli Mills at Gent’s Formal Wear weighs the options. “It doesn’t make sense to buy him a tux if he’s strictly a polo and khakis guy,” she acknowledges. “On the other hand, if he just wears his purchase to three events it will pay for itself.”

SUITED FOR STYLE
“A silver tie is the greatest symbol of elegance ever made in America,” declares Jim Hunt of Hunt Club Custom Clothiers. “It’s Cary Grant, Duke Ellington.” Hunt encourages grooms to stick with tradition and a well-tailored suit. “Keep in mind, you’re going to be looking at these photographs for years. Choose a look that’s truly classic.”

LIGHTEN UP
Don McElveen at John B. Rourke Gentlemen’s Clothiers advises matching your groom’s look to his lifestyle and the hour of the ceremony. “Nighttime is formal, but there is a trend toward casual alternatives for afternoon events. More men are opting for lighter suits and dinner jackets for warm weather.” Consider seersucker, a Southern staple.

PRETTY BOY

Make it easy for your man to go metro. Book him a round of golf and a sports manicure or hot towel facial at the Westin Savannah Harbor, where the Greenbrier Spa is conveniently located inside the clubhouse.

JUST A TRIM
Stylist Bobby Woods of Hollywood’s salon on Bull Street recommends getting a haircut at least a week before the ceremony to avoid that ‘just-cut’ look.
“I can even host a bachelor party of sorts,” he suggests. “Have all the groomsmen come in. We can smoke cigars, have a drink, and everyone can get a trim.”
For the guy who thinks “product” is something you factor into the economy, Woods suggests Bain de Terre’s light, fuss-free gel. “It adds a little sheen and looks great in pictures.”
