Refreshing Tradition - Bert John

Produced by Liz Demos

They’re young, they’re creative, they’re driven — and they have a deep appreciation for classic design and architecture. (That’s what you get when you have a cutting-edge art school in an historic Southern town.)  Meet the 1st of 5 bright local designers who are putting a fresh face on our gorgeous grand dame of a city.

“I refresh tradition by painting exposed wood frames, upholstering drawer fronts and mixing elements from different design periods.”

My style:  I like to mix things up.  My father owns an antique store and my mother is an artist, so there has always been a dichotomy of styles in my life.

I’m inspired by:  Learning about 20th century architecture and the designers from that period.  Because I’m a classically trained pianist, I knew about historic periods but was naïve when it came to more recent times.

Favorite room:  The dining room.  I was raised in a home where eating was a social event, and we always lingered after a meal.  I’m a nostalgic person.

Budget design tip: Look through the trash on the night before pickup!  Antique malls, estate sales, auctions — always be on the lookout for quality pieces at bargain prices.  Constantly scan for appropriate scale, proportions, finishes and fabric.  These elements determine whether a piece is ‘classic’ or ‘tragic.’

Fabulous find:  The two vintage club chairs I rescued from the trash pile.

Savannah’s style is: Relaxed elegance.
