Refreshing Tradition - Joel Snayd

Produced by Liz Demos

They’re young, they’re creative, they’re driven — and they have a deep appreciation for classic design and architecture. (That’s what you get when you have a cutting-edge art school in an historic Southern town.)  Meet the 2nd of 5 bright local designers who are putting a fresh face on our gorgeous grand dame of a city.

“I refresh tradition by editing.  Removing unnecessary clutter, reconfiguring cramped rooms or simply relocating furniture to a new space is a great start.  I enjoy traditional elements in design, but I don’t allow myself to get overwhelmed by them.”

My style:  I prefer a crisp and clean look with a playful streak; allowing me to marry a variety of design styles.  I like pairing seemingly disparate elements to create an interesting but cohesive design.  I definitely avoid playing it safe or creating spaces where everything matches.

I’m inspired by:  The craftsmanship of a well-tailored suit. From structure to materials, it has fueled creativity in several furniture concepts and even the layout of a room.

Budget design tip:  When you shop, ‘go in’ with a friend.  As a general rule, the higher the quantity, the lower the price.

Fabulous find:  I literally walked into (okay, tripped over) a mound of cut crystals from a 1930s hotel chandelier.  The building was being renovated, and the workmen were intending to pitch it all.  I used the crystals to design a custom chandelier for a wedding.  The modern fixture now hangs below our skylight in the office stairwell.

Favorite room:  Our living room.  It’s a place where we go to light fires and feel cosseted. For us this translates into a calm, neutral environment enlivened by nothing but deeply beloved artifacts.  Low-key, clean-lined furniture and a subdued palette establish a graceful foundation for our ever-growing collection of quirky flea market oil paintings and treasures.

Savannah’s style is:  A contradiction of old architecture and a young urban artist community.  It has a unique Bohemian quality about it.

*You know Joel as the designer of Local 11 Ten restaurant.
