Refreshing Tradition - Linn Gresham

Produced by Liz Demos

They’re young, they’re creative, they’re driven — and they have a deep appreciation for classic design and architecture. (That’s what you get when you have a cutting-edge art school in an historic Southern town.)  Meet the 4th of 5 bright local designers who are putting a fresh face on our gorgeous grand dame of a city.

Linn Gresham

“I refresh tradition with brave reinvention.  Take the seat out of a Louis XVI settee and — Voila!  You have the most speechlessly beautiful headboard imaginable.”

My style:  I call it “haute décor.”  When the client’s preference, requirements and personality or brand marry with the designer’s vision and expertise, the results are a jaw-dropping success — much like wearing the right dress to a party and remembering it for a lifetime.  This custom-tailored approach to design is my signature.

I’m inspired by:  Nature.  It’s an abundant resource for incredible color, texture, form and scale.  I also find myself looking to the runways and fashion houses for the next trends in pattern, color and spirit.

Budget design tip:  Use the most luxurious materials judiciously, instead of assuming that you can’t use them at all.  You’ll give yourself more flexibility for future changes — and a well-loved taste of the good stuff.

Fabulous find:  I got a tip from Terry O’Neil at 37th at Abercorn Antiques that she had some authentic Mid-century Modern chrome chairs at a “crazy good” price; they just needed a little vision.  I now enjoy them in my dining room, which needed a modern element.

Savannah’s style is:  Full of surprisingly beautiful contradictions.  It is both gritty and refined, traditional and modern, local and global.  The two statues on our City Hall’s frieze capture it perfectly: art and commerce.
