Savannah Magazine Goes Platinum

We've loved being your city magazine for the past two decades.  Here's to another 20 years celebrating life in Savannah together!

China was once the designated gift for 20th anniversaries, but times have changed.  Can you guess the modern motif for celebrating two decades of love and devotion?  (Hint: Its atomic number is 78.  The periodic table of elements lists it as Pt.)  That’s right: platinum.

Like a magazine’s 20th anniversary, platinum is extremely rare.  It’s even more precious than gold or silver.  And much like a certain magazine we know, no matter how old it gets or what elements it’s exposed to, platinum never tarnishes or rusts.

In the music industry, an album goes platinum when it sells more than 1 million copies.  We estimate that Savannah magazine sold its millionth copy sometime in 2009.  And although we’ve featured some beautiful china in Savannah magazine over the years, we think platinum suits us just fine as we enter our third decade.

In this issue, you’ll find a retrospective of our first 20 years as your city magazine.  It’s full of firsts for the city (first “Top Docs” issue in 1995, first Paula Deen cover in 2000) and lots of fun facts (Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby” topped the charts the year we made our debut).

While looking back is entertaining, looking forward inspires us most of all.  Witness our “20 Big Ideas for Savannah’s Next 20 Years,” a feature filled with “modest proposals” for the city’s future from Savannahians of all walks of life.  You’re sure to recognize someone you know — and get some much-needed energy for the new decade.

Happy vicennial, Savannah!
