SavMag: Have you visited
Zach: No, I haven’t. But I’d like to stay longer.
Emmy: Me too. First time. We went to the Olde Pink House last night for dinner.
SavMag: Did you hit the bar downstairs?
Emmy: We did. And we got a tour of what used to be the kitchen and there are ghost sightings down there now.
SavMag: Did you hear the waiter sing “
Emmy: No.
SavMag: There’s a waiter there who sings the best a cappella version of
Zach: I want to hear it now. There was nobody really there when we were there.
Emmy: Well, we were there at 2:00am.
Zach: That’s probably why.
Emmy: We ate dinner super late.
SavMag: Do you think you’ll return to
Emmy: Definitely. Especially for the film fest because the roster is so great and all the films they show are so good. We just did a Q&A with some SCAD students that are film students and actors. It was really cool. They were really smart and asked really great questions. I think even though Zach and I spent so much time making a movie together, we learned things about each other in the Q&A that we didn’t know going in.
Zach: Yeah, I guess. I learned some of your acting techniques.
Emmy: Thank you
Zach: Which is kind of funny because you do a movie, I mean, you are not really talking about your approach and your techniques and stuff. You kind of get an idea about the way people work. Doing Q&A’s together especially with the SCAD students was great because they were asking more about our process or technique. It was kind of interesting to hear a lot of the stuff that Emmy does and it kind of made sense. It was interesting.
SavMag: Had either of you seen "Dare" the short film by Adam Salky before agreeing to do "Dare" the feature length?
Zach: Yeah. That’s what sold me on the movie
Emmy: That’s what made me want to do the movie. Before I even read the script that’s what made me really want to read it.
Zach: I got to see it after I auditioned. I mean, obviously Adam really did a great job
SavMag: So, Emmy, your character Alexa is the stereotypical good girl and Zach’s character is the bad boy. Was it a stretch to play these type of roles or could you draw upon some personal experience to prepare?
Emmy: Not really. I don’t think I was ever a goody-goody.
Zach: With any character you do you are almost never really playing yourself but there are always parts of the character that you can relate to.
Emmy: Everyone is going to play a character differently. It comes out of who they are. Who they are is going to have a thumbprint on it whether or not you can help it. And I also think that it’s really interesting that the characters seem from the outside to be the good-girl, the bad-boy, the loser. As you really explore them you really get a sense of who they really are underneath those slots that they seem to fit into from the outside.
SavMag: What will each of you take from your experience working on this film?
Emmy: I made a lot of friends and a movie that I am really proud of that people will actually get to see. I mean, sometimes when you make these little movies you never know if it’s actually going to come out or not so it’s exciting that it comes out in
SavMag: Without giving away too much, what can audiences expect when they see "Dare"?
Emmy: Awkward, uncomfortable silence.
Zach: But also some good laughs.
Emmy: Yeah, really good laughs.
Zach: My favorite feedback was at Sundance and it happened a couple of times. Teenagers came up to me and said this is the most real high school movie I have ever seen. I think we did a good job of being pretty honest about real life and not trying to make things more dramatic or anything like that.
Emmy: I think it’s also interesting that all kind of high school people from the outside seem to fit into one category or the other. It’s interesting that as you spend time with these three character’s in the movie you get to see the three special vignettes through the their eyes and you get to see that they are much more than what they are typecast as.
SavMag: Thank you both for taking some time to speak with me.
Emmy: Thanks. We've had a great time so far in Savannah.
Zach: Yeah, it's been great. Thanks.
